Taicang in East China's Jiangsu province was awarded by the World Health Organization (WHO) for its good air quality and public health at the 8th Global Conference of the Alliance for Healthy Cities held in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, on Oct 17.

This is the third time that the city has won the WHO Healthy Cities Best Practice award, with the previous two awards won in 2008 and 2016 respectively.

Taicang has been devoted to air pollution control over the years, through the adjustment and upgrading of its industrial structures, as well as control over its coal consumption.

It has conducted air pollution treatment in its electricity industry, ensuring that all power generators with the capacity of 100,000 kilowatts and above realize ultra-low emissions.

Heavy-polluting vehicles and old vehicles have been weeded out step by step, and new-energy buses now account for 40 percent of all buses in the city.

Statistics show that air pollutant concentration in the city was remarkably lower in 2017 than that in 2013, and the days of good air quality increased to over 74 percent of the year in 2017, compared with an average 60 percent of the year during the period from 2010 to 2015.
