Traditional industries, such as the textile, chemical fiber and clothing industries, have seen steady development in recent years thanks to the introduction of intelligent manufacturing equipment and technologies. Three emerging industries – high-end equipment manufacturing, new material, and biomedicine – have also seen steady development.

The output value of Taicang's three emerging industries in the first half of this year makes up 57 percent of the city's total.

Technological innovations are also important for the development of enterprises in Taicang and the city. The number of such enterprises in Taicang exceeds 12,000, including 967 with an annual industrial output value above 20 million yuan. The total added value of industrial enterprises with an annual industrial output value above 20 million yuan from January to August this year is 149.02 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 8.6 percent, with the energy consumption for every 10,000 yuan of output value having dropped by 14.24 percent.
