Imported goods lure shoppers
An imported goods outlet opened at Taicang's bonded zone in Jiangsu province on Oct 28.
The 500-square-meter facility did not struggle to fill with customers on the first day of its trial operation.
After clearing the customs inspection, Japanese hygiene products, Australian wine, baby formula from New Zealand and various imports from the United States went directly on sale at the store. Products on sale in the store are priced 10 to 30 percent lower than those on sale at other online and offline retail businesses in China.
The imported goods proved popular among buyers, leading to some inventories being cleared by 9 am. Staff members were busy refilling shelves throughout the day.
Customers also had the option of scanning a designated QR code to place orders online and have home delivery.
The port authority plans to introduce more quality products to the Chinese market in the future. They especially hope to introduce a variety of meat products since the port is a designated port for meat importing.
Sitting at the estuary of the Yangtze River near Shanghai, Taicang port is a major shipping hub linking Chinese inland areas to the world.
