China tops gold medal tally in race walking team championships

The Chinese team won six gold medals at the 2018 World Race Walking Team Championships held in Taicang from May 5 to 6, coming in first in the gold medal standings.

On the first competition day, the Chinese team received five gold medals, including Liang Rui's 50 kilometers for adult women's race walking, Zhang Yao's 10 km for younger men, and the three team champions of 50 km and 20 km for adult women and 20 km for younger men.

Liang Rui also set a new world record in the 50 km race for adult women with a time of 4 hours 4 minutes and 36 seconds.

The team champion of 20 km for younger women was carried off by Chinese group on the second competition day.

In addition, Maria Gonzalez from Mexico won the gold medal of the 20 km for adult women with a time of 1 hour 26 minutes and 6 seconds and Mexican Alegna Gonzalez ran first in the 10 km for younger women in 45 minutes and 8 seconds.

The Japanese group also performed well at the competition, winning an individual and a group gold medal of 20 km for adult men, all the medals in 50 km for adult men's race walking and also the event's group gold medal.

Taicang was honored as “City of Racing Walking” by the International Association of Athletics Federations after the competition.

It is the second time that Taicang has organized the top race walking event in the world. The city hosted the Racing Walking World Cup in 2014, which is the predecessor of the world race walking championship and takes place every two years.
