Begonia-shaped Cakes (location: Shaxi town)

The begonia-shaped cakes are rarely seen today in Taicang but the Song Family in Shaxi town has insisted on making them for three generations.

After being baked in a mold over a tailored oven, flour mixed with lard, sugar, sweet bean paste, and chopped cumquat and green plums has a sweet taste of burnt sugar.

The glutinous flour wrapper plus red bean paste gives the eater a delicate and chewy sensation.

Covered with a yellowish layer, the begonia-shaped cakes look quite appetizing. [Photo/WeChat account: Tcfbgw]
