The word for fish in Chinese shares a similar pronunciation with abundance ("yu" in Chinese), therefore Chinese people love fishes when Spring Festival rolls around, longing for good luck.

Catching fishes when Spring Festival approaches is a popular custom in South Jiangsu's watery region.

Such an event will also be organized at the Dulou Lake in Taicang, South Jiangsu on Jan 27 of this year.

On this boisterous day, fishers would get up early to prepare for fishing. They would firstly cast nets to the ponds, and then chase the fishes far and near into the net in order to catch them more easily.

As time goes by, the ponds would be surrounded by local residents who also want to be part of the joyous harvest.

Two or three hours later, as the net becomes smaller, hundreds of fishes would gradually emerge from the water, including black carps, grass carps, spotted silver carps, and silver carps.

It's such a bustling scene where these hundreds of big and small fishes cannot help but jump and roll in the net and muddy waters.

Until the net is impossible to be narrowed again, these frisky fishes would be captured without any fight being put up.

Dulou Lake, a natural lake which in the past had an area of more than 133 hectares, has developed into an eco-agricultural park, which was identified as the provincial rural tourist attraction on Dec 2016.
