Taicang port has become the first port along the Yangtze River in China where the state-owned China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO Group) has handled more than one million containers in a year.

The total includes containers brought to Taicang as well as those shipped from the port to overseas and other destinations. The total was reached in the first 11 months of this year, according to the company's celebration ceremony held on Dec 19.

A leading company in the world shipping community, the COSCO Group is optimistic about and also supports Taicang port's development and has continuously increased its shipping capacity there over the past year.

It is expected that 1.06 million containers will be handled by the COSCO Group at Taicang port by year's end, about 23 percent of the containers passing through the port on all shippers.

Head of the COSCO Group believes that Taicang port enjoys huge development potential and hopes to cooperate further with the port in its operations and route arrangements.

Driven by a group of such shippers as the COSCO Group, the container business at Taicang port has seen rapid development with over 4.2 million containers shipped this year, an increase of 15.7 percent year-on-year. One hundred and ninety-one container routes are now available at the port.

The head of the management committee of Taicang port said that it will continue to create a favorable environment to attract more shipping resources and to contribute to Taicang's economic development.
