China's first cross-Straits homestay training base settles in Taicang

Chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: November 10, 2017

The first cross-Straits homestay training base in China is set to settle in Shaxi ancient town of Taicang, Jiangsu province, which was confirmed at a signing ceremony on Nov 6.

The project will establish a training base integrating homestay design, renovation, operation, management, and service training. It aims to become the sample training base of homestay management and rural cultural creative development in Taicang and the Yangtze River Delta region in China.

The project will establish themed homestays featuring the ancient history and profound culture of Shaxi by making full use of its Comic Strip Museum and Assembly Hall of Cultural Jiangnan (regions south of the Yangtze River in China).

Six partners are involved in the project – they are the Taiwan Sightseeing Homestay Association, a Shanghai tourism enterprise, cross-Straits homestay culture promotional center of East China Normal University, Taicang Municipal Tourism Administration, Shaxi town government, and a Taicang vocational school.

According to their cooperation agreement, the Taiwan Sightseeing Homestay Association is expected to provide advanced experience in managing homestays, train teachers for the project, participate in designing and developing the base's training courses, and help the local tourism administration and Shaxi government to promote themselves in Taiwan.

The Taicang vocational school will establish majors in homestay management to offer the base interns and provide qualified talents for the development of the local tourism industry and the Shanghai tourism enterprise.

Shaxi town government will help cooperated companies attract famous homestay brands to form an industrial cluster by issuing preferential policies.

Compared to the homestay industry in the Chinese mainland, the Taiwan homestay industry has been around since the 1980s and was kept within the bounds of legal system in 2001. Taiwan is, thus, much more experienced in managing homestays than Chinese mainland.
