Savor snacks at Taicang's ancient town

Imagine a 1,500-meters street lined with snack stores and delicacies, which is certainly a delightful sight for foodies. The Three Mile (1,500 meters) Street in Taicang's ancient Shaxi town can satisfy all the imaginations.

Folk houses in the town are all built along rivers and "one river, two streets, and three bridges" is the town's unique layout. The Three Mile Street is one of the "two streets", which is famous for its local snacks.

The swelled lard fried candy rice is one of the most famous specialties in the street. Judging from its name, one may know that the snack is made of rice, lard, and white sugar and it is also sprinkled with nuts.

With just one bite, you can feel the crunchy rice dancing in your mouth and the sweet flavor filling your tongue with delight.

Rice cakes are yet another popular snack found in the street and the Lu Family's Rice Cake, popular on the Internet, settles in the street, selling all sorts of rice cakes, including osmanthus rice cakes, rose rice cakes, mint rice cakes, and red sugar rice cakes.

Same is the case with the swelled candy rice, they are also made of rice, but they are steamed.

With a glutinous mouth feel, different kinds of rice cakes can give eaters unique tastes. You can taste the summer and fall from osmanthus and rose rice cakes, the mint rice cakes can refresh you, and the red sugar ones can give you a mellow flavor.

The street is also dotted with stores selling meat floss, meat floss bones made of pork bones, eggs of osmanthus finches, a local finch and peddlers of sugar-coated haws on a stick and cotton candy.

Delicacies are an indispensable part of the street. In the season of late autumn, the street is filled with persimmons, pumpkins, oranges, and taros.
