Taicang TV manager broadcasts games to the globe from Rio

A Taicang-born TV program maker had the experience of a life time this August, traveling to Rio and working in the Olympic media center beaming images from the games across the globe.

Ling Chen, deputy director at Shanghai Media Tech (SMT), was employed by the Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS) to troubleshoot any broadcast issues during the games as one of three technical managers overseeing the 24-hour television coverage.

"After China's successful hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games, OBS appreciates Chinese technicians in this field," said Ling. "Many other Chinese staff are working in different parts of OBS too," he added.

The OBS was established in 2001 to serve as the host broadcaster and supply the best quality video and sound to television companies to use in their coverage of the games across the world.

Ling majored in film & TV arts and technology at college, and received a MBA in international sports management from Coventry University in the UK. He has been working in SMT as a transmission system engineer, involving in various international events, including Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony, the World Gymnastics Championships and FIFA Women's World Cup.

A total of 16 global television networks from countries such as Brazil, Canada, France and China, use the OBS feed as the basis of their Olympic coverage.

Ling expressed his joy at being able to work on such a big global project and be part of a once in a lifetime opportunity to be at the heart of the Olympic Games in Rio.
