Celebrating the Shangsi Festival in historic building
The city of Taicang, Jiangsu province celebrated the Shangsi (Double Third) Festival, which points to the importance of personal hygiene in preventing diseases, with traditional entertainment inside the former residence of Wang Xijue, a top government official from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
The festival is traditionally held on the third day of the third lunar month and dates back to the Three Kingdoms period (220-280), with people going on an outing by water and having a picnic and wearing or holding an orchids. This year it fell on April 9.
