Suzhou, Jiangsu province, has taken all measures to meet the increasing demands for car parking.

According to statistics from Suzhou Traffic Command Center, Suzhou has a total of 2.75 million cars at the moment, with a daily increase of 1,006 cars this year. It is difficult to park a car in Suzhou as the city has only 424,000 parking spaces including 21,000 on-street ones.

Eighteen spare lands near busy hospitals and business centers have been converted into temporary car parks, providing 5,600 parking spaces. In 2007, the city issued an official document to allow on-street parking spaces to be leased to qualified local companies. Each round of the lease lasts for two years. The auction is now held twice a year, in April and October respectively. By now, 20 companies have participated in the initiative with 100 percent of on-street parking spaces being managed by the lease holders.

Suzhou also strives to encourage more commuters to use public transport by building "P+R" car parks. Apart from the current four “P+R” car parks, the urban area will have another 17, providing 11,000 parking spaces for drivers by 2016. Furthermore, the network of public bike rental services in the city now boasts 30,000 bikes with 1,130 service stations, which has greatly eased the traffic congestion. About 629,000 rental cards have been issued so far.
