Suzhou to rise into megacity within 15 years

Suzhou and Nanjing will be the only two megacities in Jiangsu Province, according to the province's urban development plan for the period of 2015-2030. The plan has been approved by the central government, said an official.

The urbanization rate of Jiangsu is expected to reach 80 percent in 2030 and about 72 million people will be living at two megacities as well as in 15 big, 12 medium-sized and 28 small cities and 540 towns.

The State Council had changed the definition of megacity last November and by the new definition, at the moment, Nanjing, the provincial capital, is the only megacity in Jiangsu.

However, Suzhou is going to grow into a megacity with a total population of more than 5 million in the next 15 years. Experts say that this will call for more infrastructure construction, public facilities and more input in urban management.
