The Suzhou government will take specific measures to protect the city's classical gardens. It recently published a list of gardens for protection, which shows that the city now has 53 classical gardens compared with 91 in 1951. Thirty-eight gardens vanished in the past 50 years due to various reasons.

Of the 53 remaining gardens, one was built in the Three Kingdoms Period, one in the Song Dynasty, one in the Yuan Dynasty, six in the Ming Dynasty and 20 in the Qing Dynasty. They are major tourism resources in Suzhou.

Currently, 19 gardens are open to the public, including the Humble Administrator's Garden, the Lingering Garden and the Master-of-Nets Garden. Officials said the list will be expanded to include gardens built after 1949.[Photo/Suzhou Daily]
