A Suzhou-style handcrafts exhibition was held in Suzhou Kun Opera Chuanxi Suo (a kind of early music school) and Suzhou Kun Opera Theater, respectively, in the city of Suzhou, Jiangsu province on June 17.
The exhibition, with traditional Suzhou cultural elements, displayed Suzhou-style fabrics, Han Chinese Clothing, silk handkerchief, silk fan, as well as jewelries featuring Kun Opera elements.
An emerald named "Garden Tour" weighs more than 200 karat and it shows a man in silk clothing leisurely passing through a garden. Its section is round and smooth with an elegant impression. The emerald was produced after several times of designs and modifications, according to Li Yikai who is the responsible person from the exhibition's sponsor Emma Landa.
The exquisite emerald showcases its producer Emma Landa's leading-edge oil-free cutting technology as emerald has special texture and is easy to break during cutting and polishing.
Suzhou garden is not the only one Suzhou element that is caved in jewelries. Kun Opera elements can also be found in a work named "Beauty", which shows the gorgeous phoenix crown and facial makeup, seeming to tell a meandering love story.
Li said that the works only lift a corner of the curtain in combining Suzhou handcrafts with fashionable elements. The gorgeous handcrafts cannot be done without the wisdom of many inheritors of Suzhou intangible cultural heritages. He added, "We combine Kun Opera and Suzhou garden with South American diamonds with an aim to inherit and carry forward Suzhou handcrafts and to present better traditional Suzhou culture to other people."
