Suzhou girl draws tourist map
A tourist map of Suzhou, Jiangsu province, designed in a simple and modern style, became an Internet hit recently.
The map resembles a poster as averse to a normal map. With abstract elements, the map displays local attractions such as the Gate of the Orient, the Global 188 building, the Ferris wheel park, the Suzhou Culture and Arts Center, the Suzhou Museum, Lion Grove Garden, the Humble Administrator’s Garden, Hanshan Temple and Tiger Hill.
Internet users praised the map and shared it online. Some Suzhou locals recognized the attractions immediately, while some said the logos were too abstract.
An Internet user nicknamed Bill6 said that the Suzhou Culture and Arts Center and the National Stadium in Beijing look similar, so the logo on the map may confuse readers. Some people suggest that the map include names instead of only logos.
Zhang Yiran, designer of the map, is a junior at East China University of Science and Technology. The Suzhou girl said most of her classmates still hold the old impression of traditional bridges, little rivers and gardens when they mention Suzhou.
“The impression and old tourist map may not be interesting enough to attract young people to know more about the city.”
Therefore, Zhang designed the map in a modern way.
Zhang said as a Suzhou resident, she loves the city. She will improve the map and make more maps to enable more people to learn about the city.
