The United Front Work Department of the Chinese Communist Party, Taicang municipal committee and Taicang municipal committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held a briefing about the municipal social service system for senior citizens and heard suggestions from democratic parties and non-party figures. Zhou Wenbin, deputy mayor of Taicang, and Lv Yin, vice chairman of the municipal CPPCC, attended the meeting.

As of the end of 2013, Taicang, in Jiangsu province, is home to 132,300 seniors over 60 years old, accounting for almost 28% of the registered population of Taicang. Due to the aging population, Taicang has been accelerating the construction of a social service system for senior citizens. Since 2008, Taicang has been building homes and institutions for seniors. Now there are 10 social welfare institutions and five nursing homes, with 4,695 beds. Meanwhile, community service for seniors has been improved; 52 service centers and 62 meal-giving centers were established by 2013. A service information platform for seniors was also opened.

At the briefing, people brought forth advice and suggestions such as speeding up cooperation between nursing institutions and hospitals, launching more studies and figuring out services that are most needed, increasing training and income of service staff, and promoting the Chinese tradition of respecting elders.
