Taicang’s first batch of ten volunteering projects decided

In order to promote a volunteering spirit, Taicang’s civilization committee recently demonstrated the city’s first batch of ten volunteer projects, including helping veterans from Liuchi community in Fuxiao. In addition, the committee designated the first ten volunteer bases in Taicang.

Now Liuchi is home to 26 veterans over 26 years old – eight of them once soldiers in the Korean War and another eight who are family member of martyrs. Volunteers come to measure their blood pressure, offer health guidance and purchase medicines for them once every two weeks; they talk to them, empathize with their hardships and comfort them. In addition, volunteers help wash their bedding, clean up fore them, and repair household appliances once every two weeks for veterans who cannot look after themselves.

“They are heroes who have made great contributions to our country, so we should show respect for them with voluntary work,” said Gu Xinyi, a healthcare volunteer.

The other nine key volunteering projects are 1) Chengxiang town: neighborhood assistance project in old communities lacking a property management company; 2) new district: caring for seniors; 3) the China Communist Party Taicang Municipal Committee: party member volunteering project; 4) Urban Management Bureau: urban management service station project; 5) Department of Culture, Radio, Film, TV, Press and Publication: reading promotion for children of migrant workers; 6) Environmental Protection Bureau: household greenbelt building project; 7) The China Communist Youth League Taicang Municipal Committee: walking race world cup volunteering and training project; 8) Women’s Federation: caring for single mothers in poverty; 9) Taicang Chien-Shiung Institute of Technology: caring for life and health.
