Taicang to increase green coverage this year

March 12 is Tree-Planting Day in China. Taicang held various related activities to celebrate. The city has drawn up an ambitious plan to become a national model city for greening by 2015.

In recent years, Taicang has attached great importance to improving the city's ecological environment and living environment. According to the greening authority, the city’s green coverage has reached 168,000 mu (11,200 hectares) with a green coverage ratio of 17.6 percent. The urban green coverage stands at 41.8 percent, with a green rate of 39.4 percent and 13.1 square meters of green space per capita.

The city has one national 4A tourist attraction, two 3A tourist attractions and one provincial wetland park. The city has been honored as a National Garden City as well as a National Ecological City, which will help Taicang further improve its greening and ecology.

The city will spare no effort to construct a national model green city. This year, Taicang plans to add 10,000 mu of green space, involving over 90 afforestation projects that are expected to be completed by the end of April this year.
