Construction of the long-expected Hutong (Shanghai-Nantong) Railway officially began on March 1, which it is expected will boost Taicang’s economic growth and benefit local residents. The railway will be Taicang’s first and will transform the city into an integrated system of highways, waterways and railway transportation.

A migrant worker surnamed Xu from Yancheng has been working in Taicang for 11 years. He expressed his excitement about the railway. It costs about 150 yuan for a single trip between Yancheng and Taicang by bus. But when the railway is put into service, a single journey between the two cities by train will only cost about 100 yuan, he said.

The railway construction has also won praise from local citizens since traveling around will be more convenient for them.

The Taicang section of the Hutong railway covers a total length of 37 kilometers. There will be three stops in the city, including the Taicang Port Station for ferry services and a passenger-dedicated Taicang Station and Taicang South Station.

Based on the construction plan, the railway will be divided into two auxiliary lines in Taicang. The first will run through Nantong, Taicang and Anting. The second starts from Nantong, passes through Taicang and ends in Pudong.

The railway has a targeted running speed of 200 km per hour and will be finished in five and a half years.

Once operational, the new line should shorten the journey between Shanghai and Taicang to 30 minutes.

The Hutong railway, as a major part of the coastal transportation artery in China, will branch out in all directions, finally ending a history of no railways in Taicang, enhancing the transport capability, accelerating economic development, strengthening ties with Shanghai and improving the railway network along the line of the Yangtze River Delta areas.
