The children’s drama Five Clowns and A Chair by Théâtre de la Sardine will be staged at the Taicang Theater on Sept 7.

The drama, performed by five clowns, is a gala that combines comedy, short sketches, music and dance. It talks about friendship, love and dreams.

The Théâtre de la Sardine, whose name comes from French saltimbanque, was founded in March 2005 by Ma Zhaoqi, the head of the troupe. Ma was a graduate of the École internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq. The actors of the troupe use masks, clowns, dancing, singing, dumb shows and gymnastics as elements to explore a new way of performance.

The troupe believes that their shows must be like a mirror that can reflect the phenomenon and problems of modern society. What’s more, their shows should be delicate and understood by most audiences. The audience is the most important element in theater. Only when a drama is close to life can it move audiences.
