The International Day of Families is celebrated every May 15 around the world as a global day for highlighting the importance of families as the basic units of society who play a significant role in generational growth.

The theme of the 2012 International day of Families is “Ensuring work-family balance”, and was announced by the UN information center. On May 12 representatives from Taicang’ s Women Federation and Civilization Office held a series of activities in recognition of the achievements that have been accomplished by thousands of local women who strive to make the city a cleaner and greener place to live in.

Deputy Secretary of the party committee, Lu Weiqi, gave a speech during the activities and the Minister of the Taicang’s Publicity Department, Chen Xuerong, and the Deputy Chairman of Standing Committee, Xia Linxiang were among the attending guests.

Mr Lu Weiqi emphasized the positive impact that diverse women’s organizations have on participating in the city’s construction and management. Lu also stressed getting more women involved in a variety of activities and festivals organized by the Women’s Federation, with the aim of introducing and promoting the low-carbon concept to the society. During the event, an activity themed, “Ensuring every woman and every family participates in protecting the environment” was announced to begin in the near future. In addition, 100 great model families and 30 model mothers-in-law and daughters-in-laws selected by the community were awarded by the organization.
