Taicang ICH-Taoism music of Shuangfeng
Shuangfeng Jade Emperor Pavilion, originally known as Shenxiao Wanling pavilion, was constructed in the 22nd year of the reign of Emperor Zhiyuan of the Yuan Dynasty (1206-1368 AD).
It was founded by Zhou Jingchu, a native of Shuangfeng and disciple of Zhang Yucai, a great Taoist master.
According to historical records, Zhou Daolu, a Taoist priest of the Shuangfeng Jade Emperor Pavilion in the late Yuan Dynasty, was good at composing songs and they were very popular. This showed that Taoism had already been prevalent in Shuangfeng during the Yuan Dynasty.
The Taoist music has a long history and has left profound and lasting influences on the folk culture.
It is known that eight of the performers of the Zhejiang Kunqu Opera Troupe used to be Taoist priests in Shuangfeng. Among them, Chen Zugen, called respectfully by the public as “King of flute players”, was a native to Shuangfeng.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the Jade Emperor Pavilion was turned into a grain depot and later demolished. It was reconstructed in Aug 1993 and Taoism prevailed once again.
