Taicang Aquatic Foods Festival

Taicang of Jiangsu province is located at the junction of the river and the sea, making it a place to enjoy a large variety of aquatic foods.

Since ancient times, the life styles of Taicang people been closely related to water. They grew paddy rice for living, rowed boats for transport and ate fishes as a staple. Over the years, a fine culture of aquatic foods has been cultivated.

Recently, with the increasing popularity of Taicang’s aquatic foods in East China, about 1 million tourists are attracted to Taicang every year to taste the fresh and quality food here. Liuhe alone boasts over 110 food and catering companies and many of them have been awarded as a “Famous Restaurant with Unique Features in Suzhou” in provincial appraisals.

Gourmets and tourists are often amazed at the fabulous taste of the fishes here, be it river fish like saury, shad and silverfish, or sea fish such as yellow croaker, hairtail, squid, and abalone. Black carp, grass carp, silver carp, carp, crucian carp and turtles from the lake are also praised.

For self-driving tourists from Shanghai to Taicang, the below two routes are recommendable:

1. Take the Hutai Road all the way out of Shanghai to the town of Liuhe

2. Take the Shanghai–Jiading Expressway and turn into the G5 Highway and off the highway at the Taicang exit. Then take the Liutai Road all the way to Liuhe.
